Several Indian-American and South Asian candidates are running for key positions in the US elections, including mayoral and gubernatorial races.
Didbal was appointed by the California city council and will be sworn in on December 5.
The two-day conference, attended by 100 people representing the local South Asian community, advocates, and service providers, was held at Montclair State University. It was the first regional conference organised by South Asian Americans Leading Together in partnership with 12 local organisations.
For any would-be activist, the work starts in one's backyard, said Ravi Bhalla, a councilman for Hoboken, New Jersey.
'I'm a Sikh American. I have 3 daughters. And yesterday, I told them to turn off the radio,' he tweeted.
'You shouldn't mistreat Muslims, you shouldn't mistreat Sikhs, you shouldn't mistreat anyone you perceive to be the other.'
