The 30-share BSE Sensex surged by 477.24 points or 0.83 per cent to close at more than one-week high of 57,897.48. As many as 28 of its constituents closed with gains while two declined. The broad-based Nifty of the National Stock Exchange rose by 147.20 points or 0.86 per cent to settle 17,233.45, tracking gains in Sun Pharma, Asian Paints, and Reliance Industries.
After a strong start to the week on Tuesday, the Sensex this morning opened 15 points higher at 16,868 amid subdued global cues.

The Sensex opened with a positive gap of 273 points at 17,560 on the back of strong US markets on Thursday and a rally in Asia. Autos, IT and selective banking stocks were the key movers. It inally ended with a gain of 313 points at 17,600. The NSE Nifty moved up 62 points to close at 5,228. Reliance Infrastructure gained 6.9% to Rs 1523, ICICI Bank was up 6.4% to Rs 935.50 and Maruti Suzuki gained 6.2% to Rs 788. Wipro gained 2.8%, Satyam was up 2.5% and TCS advanced 2.3%.

ICICI Bank surged 4.5%, HDFC and SBI rallied 4% each, Satyam, NTPC and Larsen & Toubro were up over 1% each and ITC, ONGC, R-Energy, Wipro, Tata Steel, BHEL and M&M were other gainers. ACC dropped nearly 2% to Rs 783 while Maruti and DLF were down around 1%.

BHEL and Jaiprakash Associates soared 5.5% each to Rs 1,872 and Rs 246, respectively. ACC, ONGC and Cipla gained 2.3% each at Rs 819, Rs 1,054 and Rs 231, respectively. HDFC, ICICI Bank, ITC, DLF, L&T, Tata Motors and Ambuja Cements were other gainers. TCS slumped 10.6% to Rs 887.

Reliance Communications, ICICI Bank and ITC, Reliance Energy and Hindalco were other gainers. Ambuja Cements dropped 3.6% to Rs 112. BHEL declined over 3% to Rs 1,778.

After dropping to a low of 16,726 in noon deals on profit-taking, the Sensex finally ended with a gain of 341 points at 16,949. The NSE Nifty moved up 91 points to 4,929. The BSE market breadth was fairly negative - out of 2,741 stocks traded, 1,909 declined, 798 advanced and 34 were unchanged on Wednesday.
Reliance Energy zoomed nearly 8% to Rs 1,206. Tata Steel soared 7% to Rs 850.
