India is loosing a whopping Rs 18,000 crore (Rs 180 billion) annually due to the dreaded foot and mouth disease (FMD) in cattle and livestock, a senior official of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) said.

Sitharaman also announced Rs 10,000 crore fund to support 2 lakh micro food enterprises for promoting health and wellness, herbal, organic and nutritional products.
The government will amend the six-and-a-half-decade old Essential Commodities Act to deregulate food items, including cereals, edible oil, oilseeds, pulses, onion and potato, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said on Friday. The amendment, besides deregulating production and sale of food products, will provide for no stock limit to be imposed on any produce.
