After days of uncertainty and dragging, the seat-sharing issue between the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and left parties for the April 13 Tamil Nadu assembly polls was finally sealed on Monday with the Jayalalithaa-led party allotting 22 seats to Communist Party of India-Marxist and the Communist Party of India.
Communist Party of India- Marxist state general secretary N Varadarajan and Communist Party of India state secretary D Pandian demanded to know why the Centre had sought three months time in the Supreme Court and agreed to consider an alternate alignment. "Why is the government not firm in carrying out the project," they queried. The leaders said other alignments were not acceptable since they will affect marine ecology and the livelihoods of the fishermen.
The talks are expected to conclude in two or three days.
Miffed over the ruling All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam's "approach" towards finalising a seat-sharing agreement for the Lok Sabha polls in Tamil Nadu, the Communist Party of India - Marxist and the Communist Party of India on Thursday called off their month-old alliance with the Jayalalithaa-led party.
Security has been beefed up at Karunanidhi's Gopalapuram residence as DMK cadre kept pouring in there.
