The Punjab government announced a windfall of Rs 10 million to sportspersons from the state who win a gold medal at the August 13-29 Athens Olympics.

The government will also give Rs five million to silver medal winners and Rs 2.5 million for winning a bronze, Rana Gurmeet Singh Sodhi, Punjab's Chief Parliamentary secretary said in Chandigarh on Friday.

He said in case of team events like hockey, the formula for the incentive is being worked out.

Nine sports persons from the state, including star hockey forward Gagan Ajit Singh, ace shooter Abhinav Bindra and seasoned discus thrower Neelam Jaswant Singh are in the 75-member Indian contingent.

The others from the state are athletes Bahadur Singh (shot put), Rajwinder Kaur (women's 4x400m relay) and Harwant Kaur (women's discus throw), trap shooter Manavjit Singh Sandhu, hockey player Baljeet Singh Dhillon and wrestler Palwinder Singh Cheema.

Sodhi said the state government also decided to revive the 'Maharaja Ranjit Singh' award, which was discontinued seven years back. It will be given to the best sportsperson from the state.
