S. Santhosh Singh of Manipur created history on Sunday as he became the first Indian pugilist to win a silver medal at the men's under-19 World Boxing Championships in Morocco.
Despite putting up a brave effort, Santhosh lost to local favourite Ouatini Nehdi in the 54 kg wt category on Points 23:39.
The under-19 World Boxing Championships was held at Agadir, Morocco from September 9 to 17. A total of 273 boxers representing 59 Countries are participating in this Championships.
India sent a contingent of 7 boxers including Commonwealth Games 2006 Bronze Medallist Jitender Kumar and South Asian Games 2006 Gold Medalist Dinesh Kumar.
Santhosh Singh, the unassuming younger brother of former Olympian S. Suresh Singh, beat Mari Jus Kravciuks of Latvia in the semi-final to become the first Indian to enter the world championship final. He beat England's Luke Campbell in the pre-quarterfinals and Claudio Guzman of Dominican Republic in the quartefinals, en-route to the final.
Santhosh Singh is training at the State of the Art - Elite Army Sports Institute, Pune for the past three years as a civilian boy trainee and was formerly in the Sports Authority of India's Boys Sports Company Scheme at BEG & Centre.
