Sikh devotees everywhere celebrated the 537th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak, founder of Sikhism, on Sunday.
In his teachings, Nanak denounced the caste system and taught that everyone is equal, regardless of caste, gender or religion.
Guru Nanak (October 20, 1469 to May 7, 1539) is the first of the 10 Sikh Gurus, and was born in Talwandi -- now Nankana Sahib, near Lahore in present-day Pakistan -- to Kalu Mehta and Matta Tripat, Hindus belonging to the Khatri caste.
