The newly-appointed Minister of State for Planning V Narayanasamy on Monday expressed confidence that prices will come under control soon following the steps taken by the Centre to contain inflationary pressure.

"The union government has done its job, and within few days price situation will be rectified", he said after assuming the charge of Minister of State in the Planning Commission.

In the Planning Ministry, Narayanasamy replaces M V Rajashekharan whose term in the Rajya Sabha is coming to an end on April 9. A member of the Upper House, Narayanasamy, was one of the seven ministers who were inducted into the council of ministers on Sunday.

The annual rate of inflation for week ended March 22, has touched 7 per cent, the highest in the last three years. The government in the recent past has taken various steps to contain prices like banning export of non-basmati rise and scrapping import duty on crude edible oil.

Pointing out that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has been trying hard to control inflation by reducing excise and customs duties and other initiatives, the Minister said, "both the Centre and states have to work together to check prices. While the Centre sends wheat, rice and kerosene to states, it is the job of the states to distribute these goods under the public distribution system to the people."
