Faced with shortage of skilled manpower, country's top software exporter Tata Consultancy Services on Friday said it would train 2,000 science graduates over the next year under its new programme.

About 500 students have already been hired for pilot projects of 'TCS Talent Transformation Programme' in the company's Chennai facility, TCS CEO and managing director S Ramadorai said.

"The ongoing pilot is currently underway at Chennai with 500 science graduates selected from across the country. TCS plans to scale up this programme to 2,000 such students during this academic year," he said.

However, the students after undergoing the training programme at the company will take home less salary at the entry level than the engineering graduates, Ramadorai added.

He said over 350 colleges have been accredited for this programme, which extends over a period of seven months.

"About one million graduates pass out of colleges every year in the country but our focus currently is on about two lakh science graduates," S Padmanabhan, head, human resources, TCS Global said.

He said this initiative would produce industry ready professionals who will be as good as fresh engineers. According to industry body Nasscom, India will face a shortage of about 500,000 skilled manpower by 2010 in the IT and ITeS sector.
