Dutch consumer electronics major Royal Philips is in talks with major retail players in India, including Mukesh Ambani-promoted Reliance Retail and Tata Group company Trent for a tie-up, as it looks to shore up volumes in the country.

"We have initiated talks with major retail players, including Reliance, Hypercity and even the Tatas for tie-ups," Philips Electronics India general manager (consumer electronics) Shailesh Prabhu said.

He, however, reiterated that the talks were at an initial stage and nothing has been finalised yet. "Our aim is to scale up volumes in India. Already, we are there in Big Bazaar and e-Mart," said Prabhu, while announcing the launch of the company's latest 'Ambilight' flat TV display.

He said despite being a new entrant in the flat panel display segment, Philips was confident of catching up.

"Next year, we are looking at selling about 50,000 units of FPDs at a turnover of around Rs 225 crore (Rs 2.25 billion)," he said, adding the company's new FPDs price range would be between Rs 30,000 and Rs 2.5 lakh.

Overall, he said the company was looking to sell about 4 lakh colour televisions this year. "Next year, our target is to sell about 6 lakh colour TVs. With the cricket World Cup coming up we are confident of achieving good sales," he said.

Gearing up for the event, Prabhu said the company would increase the number of its branded outlet 'Philips Arena' to 100 next year from the current levels of 45.

He also said the company expected to spend about Rs 40 crore (Rs 400 million) on brand promotion in 2007. "Already, we have started the exercise with a Rs 10 crore (Rs 100 million) first phase campaign and we expect two-three such more exercises," he said.
