The Central Industrial Security Force is soon expected to take over the task of providing protection to VIPsĀ from commandos of the elite National Security Guards and the Indo-Tibetan Border Police.
It is already in the process of taking charge of security at vital installations across the country in the wake of growing terrorist threats.
At least three CISF battalions, comprising around 3,000 personnel, have been earmarked for special training in providing proximate security, police sources said in New Delhi on Sunday.
About 500 CISF personnel have already completed training and are ready for deployment, they said.
The NSG and the ITBP are providing security to about 300 'protected persons' on the directions of the Union home ministry, the sources said.
The decision to induct these commandos into VIP protection followed last year's recommendation by a Group of Ministers that NSG, ITBP, Central Reserve Police Force and other security agencies providing VIP security be relieved from such duties so that they could concentrate on the tasks they had been created for.
NSG Director General R S Mooshahary has welcomed the move and said it would allow the NSG to concentrate on its intended task of counter-terrorism.
A couple of batches of CISF personnel even underwent training at the NSG's base in Manesar.
