Hundreds of miles away from home, President A P J Abdul Kalam tasted his favourite sambar and vada prepared by a woman from Bangalore who runs a restaurant in Iceland's capital.

The President was on Tuesday attending the dinner, hosted by Indian Ambassador to Norway, Mashed Sachdeva, who also looks after Iceland, where he tasted the south Indian food with typical domestic spices.

Chandrika, married to an Icelander, received compliments from the visitors for the delicious Indian food.

The woman, in her early 40s, came here more than a decade ago. "It took some time to pick up before the eating joint became a hit. We are now being asked to cater to all government functions as the present administration headed by Olafur Ragnar Grimsson is a great lover of Indian food," she said.

As she was busy receiving the compliments, President Kalam walked up to her and blessed her. When reporters asked the President whether he had any comments to share about the food.

"Eat vada, it is very nice. Also have some sambar, you will love it," a happy Kalam said.
