A leading British daily on Monday paid rich tributes to Subedar Major and Honorary Captain Umrao Singh, the last of the surviving Victoria Cross holders in the Indian Army, who passed away in New Delhi on Monday.

Capt Singh, who died at the age of 85, won the Victoria Cross in Burma during the Second World War.

And 50 years later he complained to British Prime Minister John Major about the poor pensions enjoyed by holders of the VC, the Daily Telegraph noted.

"By his personal example and magnificent bravery, Havildar Umrao Singh set a supreme example of gallantry and devotion to duty," his citation for VC said, noted the report. "Singh was invested with the Victoria Cross by King George VI at Buckingham Palace on October 15, 1945."

John Major mentioned Singh when he said VC holders' pension needed to be significantly increased, the report said.
