Three militants belonging to the banned United Liberation Front of Asom were killed following a fierce early morning encounter with police at Koirara in Nalbari district of Assam on Thursday.
Police claimed to have recovered some weapons and live ammunition from the slain militants whose identity was yet to be ascertained. Senior district police officials rushed to the village where the encounter took place.
Meanwhile in a separate incident, the banned ULFA detonated a powerful bomb at the yard of North East India's biggest warehouse of the Food Corporation of India at New Guwahati area on Thursday noon injuring two FCI employees, police informed.
The impact of the explosion that occurred just over a fortnight after the abduction of the FCI executive director Dr P C Ram, who has remained untraced since April 17 last though his driver was released by the abductors, was such that it shattered the window panes of the guard house, caused damage to seven motorcycles, two cars and 11 bicycles parked on the yard.
The injured FCI employees were identified as Purna Sharma and Ratneswar Rabha who were immediately rushed to Guwahati Medical College Hospital. It is the biggest FCI warehouse in the region with a capacity of 23000 MT.
A senior FCI official, on condition of anonymity, said that the blast would make FCI staff who are already in jitters over the abduction of Dr P C Ram, feel more insecure. The CMD of the FCI, during his visit to the state last week, asked for more security for the corporation's staff from Assam government.
