Five non-resident Indians, including two children, have died in a fire at their house in Leicester, Britain, police said on Tuesday.

Kavita Sharma, her son Sunit (6), daughter Pritika (3), the children's grandmother Vinod and their uncle Bipan died on Monday as flames engulfed their house in Somerville Road, about 100km from London.

Her husband Deepak was the only survivor, as he had left for work minutes before the fire broke out.

Kavita was on the telephone to relatives in India when she detected smoke and tried to raise an alarm.

She rang a relative, Pervin Khosla, a few doors down the same street to shout, "Auntie, there is a fire", before opening a bedroom window to scream for help from neighbours.

A final call to her husband was cut off and rather than jump to safety from the first floor, she tried to save the others.

She is thought to have reached the children's bedroom before being overcome by fumes.
