Landslides triggered by overnight rains claimed two lives in Baramulla district while at least seven others were feared dead after a house collapsed in Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir on Friday.

In Doda, seven members of a family are feared dead in a house collapse about five kilometres from Dessa area.

"The house of Jodh Ram, a resident of Diwalkund in Dessa belt of the district, collapsed because of heavy rains in the area," Senior Superintendent of Police (Doda) Javed Naseeb Manhas told PTI.

He said all the inmates of the house are feared dead.

"The incident has taken place at a very remote and inaccessible area. We have rushed a police team to the spot. So far we have not recovered any body but we fear that the all the inmates might have died in the mishap," he said.

The officer said that police and army have launched a rescue operation, but initial reports suggest that the inmates of the house would not have survived.

While in Uri area of Baramulla district, two persons were killed when a landslide struck them on Friday.

Abdul Jabbar War and Mohammad Dilawar Mir had gone to the forest area in Limber area of Uri tehsil to collect mushrooms when they came under a landslide, a police official said.

He said while War died on the spot, Mir was rescued by locals in a critically injured condition but succumbed to injuries on way to hospital.

Sixteen members of two families were buried alive when a residential house caved into the earth in Chadoora area of central Kashmir Budgam district on Sunday night.

With Friday’s incident, the death toll in landslides, caused by heavy rainfall over the past week, in Kashmir valley has shot up to 18.
