Suspected militants late on Wednesday night shot at and critically wounded a police officer in the Bemina locality of the summer capital Srinagar.

A senior police officer said gunmen appeared near the home of police inspector Shabir Ahmad and rang the door bell upon which the officer came out of his home to answer the bell.

"As soon as Shabir opened the door of his house, gunmen opened fire from a pistol critically wounding the officer," the official said.

He was immediately rushed to SMHS hospital where attending doctors were trying to revive him.

Sources said Shabir has received critical bullet injuries in his lower abdomen.

Security forces rushed to the spot and the area is being searched.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack. The assailants, whose number could not be known, managed to escape.
