In an unusual incident, a man has been booked by traffic police for "negligent driving" following the death of his wife in a road mishap while he was trying to negotiate a pothole riding his two wheeler.

The couple, hailing from Madhya Pradesh, were employees of different tech firms in Bengaluru. They were returning home on September 17 night after celebrating Ganesha Chathurti at a friend's place with the woman riding pillion when the mishap occurred at Devarabeesanahalli flyover, police said.

A senior police official who did not wish to be named said the two-wheeler rider was booked for negligent driving but only a probe would reveal whether the mishap had taken place due to this reason or because of road conditions, mechanical defect of the bike or any other external factor.

Officials said action would be taken against civic agencies if the investigation revealed criminal negligence on their part with regard to maintenance of the particular stretch of road.

They also said there have been several cases where a close relative of the deceased, who was riding the vehicle have been booked, but not charge-sheeted if found not at fault.
