Surjeet to be cremated on Sunday

Harkishan Singh Surjeet, who passed away at the age of 93 after prolonged illness, would be creamated on Sunday August 3, at 4 pm according to a press release issued by the Communist Party of India-Marxist . His mortal remains would be kept at the CPI-M headquarters till the cremation.

'The Polit Buro of the Communist Party of India-Marxist records with profound grief the passing away of Comrade Harkishan Singh Surjeet, veteran leader and outstanding figure of the Communist movement of the country' the statement said.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh may join the funeral by cutting short his visit to Sri Lanka.

Lok Sabha speaker Somnath Chatterjee, said that he was shocked by the demise of Surjeet.

Somnath said that Surjeet's demise had come as a personal loss to him.

"He was the tallest leader in the country and the main architect of the Communist movement in India," Somnath recalled.

Chatterjee said that Surjeet fought for the emancipation of the working class: "His principled fight for the established of a democratic way of life based on secularism and preservation of the rights of peasants, workers and the common people of the county."

"I convey my sincere condolence to his gracious wife and all the members of his family," Somnath said.
