Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will return home from hospital on Tuesday.
Doctors at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences sais that Dr Singh is fine and will need rest for a couple of days before he can get back to his hectic schedule.
Doctors at AIIMS spoke on the procedures involved while performing the surgery on Dr Singh, known as the Trans Urethral Resection of the prostate gland.
The TURP which is done to remove symtoms of an enlarged prostrate is performed using general anesthesia and a tube like instrument known as the cystoscope is inserted into the penis through the urethra and up to the prostrate gland.
The next procedure will be to use a cutting instrument, which is inserted through the cystoscope which in turn removes the prostrate gland piece by piece.
Doctors say that there could be bleeding during the surgery and to avoid this an electric current is used to stop such bleeding.
After the surgery, a Foley catheter is placed in the body to remove the urine.
A Foley catheter is a thin, sterile tube inserted into the bladder to drain urine. The catheter will be removed when the urine begins to run clear; this is usually within two to three days.
The normal time taken during the surgery is one hour, doctors said.
Doctors said the normal course of the stay in hospital after such a surgery is performed is at least one week. However, the patient will require at least 3 weeks time to completely recover from the surgery.
After the surgery, Dr Singh was recommended to drink plenty of fluids as this helps in flushing fluids through the bladder, which according to doctors, is essential for a speedy recovery.
The patient will have to avoid aereated drinks, coffee and alchohol after such a surgery.
The patient could also have certain side effects after such an operation.
However, there is nothing to worry as this is normal, doctors said. They said the side effects, which are normally mild and temporary, are effects of a sucessful operation.
The side effects:
The urine will contain blood for several days, which will clear after three weeks.
There will be an urgent need to pass urine, and when the patient does so there will be a burning sensation.
Mild incontinence (urine leakage).
According to medical experts, these side effects are very temporary in nature and last only upto a period of three weeks. However, in case they last over the specified period then the patient will have to visit the doctor.
