India's first indigenously developed multi-role jet, 'Saras', will undergo its maiden test flight next month, aviation scientist T S Prahlad said in Kolkata on Tuesday.
President of the Aeronautic Society of India, Kota Harinarayana, said the test flight was tentatively scheduled for February 4.
'Saras' is being jointly developed by National Aerospace Laboratories, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited and the privately-owned Taneja Aerospace.
"We expect to get the certification by 2005 December. The aircraft can begin commercial operation from 2006," Prahlad, who works for NAL, said.
'Saras' can be used as a "feeder" in executive transport, light-package carrier and as a remote-sensing
The aircraft's take-off distance is 570 metres and landing distance 605 metres. It has a maximum speed of 620 km/hr and can fly in all weather.
Prahlad said 'Saras' could see a high demand not only in India, but abroad as well. There is a market for about 40 small/light aircraft in India," he said.
