NCW to probe Bijal Joshi gang rape case

January 16, 2004 22:09 IST

The National Commission for Women on Friday decided to conduct a probe into the sensation Bijal Joshi gang rape case.

Bijal Joshi, girlfriend of Delhi-based businessman Sajal Jain, was allegedly gang raped by him and three of his friends at a hotel in Ahmedabad on New Year's eve. A few days later Joshi committed suicide and cited rape as the reason for it in a suicide note.

The NCW team will be led by Chairperson Poornima Advani would visit Ahmedabad on Saturday to start its investigations.

The team would visit the residence of the victim to take statements from her family members and neighbours, the spokesperson said.

The NCW delegation will also question Delhi-based businessman Sajal Jain, she said. The team will also summon Gujarat government officials, she added.

Jain had been absconding since the incident before he was traced to Apollo Millennium Hospital in Delhi last Sunday. He was admitted to the ICU of the hospital for reported food poisoning and was arrested on Friday after being moved out of it.
