Waving a flag of the so-called Khalistan inside the high security Burail Jail in Chandigarh, Balwant Singh, a main accused in the 1995 assassination of former Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh, reportedly admitted to the crime during a trial of the case being held in the prison.

Singh, who later handed over the flag and his written statement admitting to having killed Beant outside the Punjab and Haryana Civil Secretariat in Chandigarh on August 31, 1995, said he and the human bomb Dilawar Singh, who died in the explosion, had executed the assassination, prison sources said.

He said the other accused have been falsely implicated in the case. Trial of the case was being held in the court of Additional Sessions Judge cum Special Judge, CBI M M Sharma inside the high security jail, sources said.

Burail Jail and Chandigarh Police sources told PTI  on Sunday that they were investigating as to how the so-called flag managed to reach the accused as the security in the prison had been tightened after the jailbreak in January 2004. The antecedents of all the visitors who had met the accused were being verified, the sources said.

Thirteen accused were named in this assassination, out of which nine were arrested, three were at large and one Dilawar Singh died during the assassination.
