The condition of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbhandhak Committee chief Gurcharan Singh Tohra, who suffered two successive heart attacks on Thursday, has improved slightly.

"There has been some improvement in Tohra's heartbeat and blood pressure," SGPC secretary Manjit Singh said on Friday.

The doctors are keeping a watch on the SGPC president's condition.

He suffered the attacks during the cleaning of the sacred water tank of Golden Temple in Amritsar, which commenced on Thursday.

"All his other parameters are showing satisfactory improvement but he continues to be critical," a bulletin issued by the private hospital said.

"Tohra responded to all the visiting VIPs, including Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Deputy Prime Minister L K Advani, Chief Minister Amarinder Singh and SAD president Parkash Singh Badal," it said.

Vajpayee, who was in Amritsar to attend a rally with Advani, spent about 15 minutes with the 80-year old SGPC chief. Advani visited Tohra immediately after his Bharat Uday Yatra entered the city.

Tohra was admitted to hospital after he suffered two successive heart attacks, while leading Kar Seva for cleaning the sarovar of the Golden Temple.

The bulletin said the drugs being administered to Tohra have been reduced.
