The Bharatiya Janata Party leadership in New Delhi has managed to quieten B S Yeddyurappa, who has been demanding his reinstatement as Karnataka chief minister, at least for now. Further talks on leadership change in state can only take place on April 1, the former CM was told.

The central leadership stated that they did not want any constitutional crisis in Karnataka, till the state budget is passed on March 28.

Yeddyurappa and his followers have been told that they would need to remain quiet and cooperate with the party until then. All leaders have been asked to return to Delhi next month,

However, Yeddyurappa is expected to extend his stay in New Delhi and meet LK Advani and Murli Manohar Joshi before returning to Bengaluru.

Yeddyurappa, who was confident that his demands would be meet, looked perturbed after the meeting, said insiders. He had urged that a decision on the issues raised by him should be taken by Friday.

The Yeddyurappa camp was given a patient hearing, but strongly opposing their demands was BJP patriarch Advani, who was against a change in leadership from day one. Moreover, Karnataka CM Sadananda Gowda, who is also in Delhi, managed to secure his position for now. He accused his mentor Yeddyurappa of anti-party activities.

Sources say that the road ahead for Yeddyurappa appears to be tough and Thursday's developments suggest that he may not be reinstated. He would, however, be asked to settle for the post of party president, sources also said.
