The Gujarat government has unveiled plans for forthcoming Navratri celebrations on a big scale to tap tourism potential and attract investments to the state.
"We are all obsessed with various '-isms' like capitalism, socialism, etc. But, unfortunately, we have not paid adequate attention to tourism," Chief Minister Narendra Modi said on Friday, after unveiling plans for the event to an audience of foreign diplomats and top industrialists.
"Gujarat has taken a lead to promote event-based tourism, starting with Navratri and the kite festival. We tried to establish garba on an international level and it has become popular in many countries," Modi said. "Business has increased multifold, due to our efforts to promote Navratri. There are vast opportunities for employment of poor people in the tourism sector."
The state government has been organising Navratri under the banner of 'Vibrant Gujarat' for the past two years.
Modi was speaking during an interactive session on Navratri and the tourism sector, which was attended by ministers and dignitaries of foreign missions, corporate leaders, senior functionaries from chambers of commerce and members of travel and tourism industry.
