Army JCO among six killed in Manipur violence

Six persons, including an army personnel, were killed and four others injured in separate violence in militancy-hit Manipur, official sources said on Tuesday.

Five suspected militants of People's Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak were killed during a heavy exchange of fire with a combined team of police commandos and the Gorkha regiment in the wee hours of Tuesday at Toubul Patto area in Bishenpur district of Manipur. 

The security team raided the area following reports of the presence of militants and killed five militants during the six-hour long encounter. A woman was injured by a stray bullet, sources said adding that nine rifles, including four AK 56 rifles, were recovered besides several rounds

of ammunition.

In another incident this morning, unidentified militants exploded a bomb at Chingmeirong Khongnang Ani Karak area in Imphal West district injuring two Assam Rifles jawans of the 39th battalion and a civilian, sources said.

In yet another militant attack, a junior commissioned officer of 9th Assam Rifles battalion was killed when insurgents ambushed a security patrol party in interior Churachandpur district bordering Myanmar and Mizoram on Monday night, sources said.

Insurgents of the People's Liberation Army, the armed wing of the Revolutionary People's Front, is suspected to be behind the attack, although no group or individual has so far claimed responsibility, sources added.
