The Assam government in association with a computer training company has launched a programme for students in Majuli, a remote island village in the middle of the Brahmaputra.

Under the programme students aged between 10 and 17 in Majuli will be taught basic computer skills.

With yearly floods and frequent power cuts, Majuli, the largest river island in the world, may not be the perfect place for computer education, but the government is going ahead with the project.

"We had to use boats to transport the computers to Majuli (which is connected to the mainland through a ferry service that operates twice a day)," said Balasubramanium, training head, National Institute of Information Technology.

Under the current programme, students in three schools will receive computer training.
