An Indian citizen has pleaded guilty in a US court to attempting to transfer hundreds of thousands of dollars to be used to buy anti-aircraft missiles, reports the BBC.

Moinuddeen Ahmed Hameed, 40, was among the three people rounded up after FBI agents arrested suspected British arms dealer Hemant Lakhani in New Jersey last August for trying to sell the missiles.

Hameed pleaded guilty in a US District Court on Tuesday to "conspiracy to operate an unlicensed money transmitting business," and  agreed to testify against Lakhani.  Prosecutors accepted his contention that he did not know that the transactions involved illegal weapons.

Hameed, who will be sentenced on July 6,  faces up to five years in prison and a fine of up to US$250,000. But according to prosecutors, a more likely sentence would be between 24 to 32 months, after which he would be deported since he is in the US illegally.
