The Indian embassy in Saudi Arabia will provide an air ticket and visa for the Tamil Nadu woman whose hand was chopped off allegedly by her employer. She has received no compensation. A Ganesh Nadar/Rediff.com reports.

Kasthuri Munrathinam, the maid whose hand was allegedly cut off as she tried to flee her employer's home in Saudi Arabia, is set to return home.

Munrathinam earlier told Rediff.com that she tried to escape from the two-storey home by tying a saree to a balcony railing when her hand was cut off by someone.

The Saudi police claimed she lost her hand when she fell on a generator below the house. They also alleged Munrathinam is mentally disturbed.

Her family has denied that she is mentally disturbed and questioned the Saudi police version of how she lost her hand.

An Indian embassy official visited Munirathinam at the hospital on Wednesday, October 21. Munirathinam told Rediff.com on the phone from her hospital bed in Riyadh, "I am much better now. I am walking in the hospital on my own. I am also eating my meals by myself. I can perform all my daily chores."

"The embassy official told me my passport is being processed and they are going to give me an exit visa and an air ticket to go back home."

Asked if she was receiving any compensation, she said, "A couple of days ago, three officials from our embassy had come to meet me. I asked them about compensation and they said they would inquire and let me know. On Wednesday only one official came and he did not talk about compensation. I think I will get compensation only after the case is over."

The doctors, a source at the hospital said, had decided that Munirathinam is fit to be discharged from the hospital.

But the doctors treating her, the hospital source added, had said she is not fit to travel alone. She will need an escort to make sure she reaches her home safely. The embassy may provide an escort to take her home, the source felt.

Muniratinam's son in Vellore, M Mohan, was not aware of the latest developments. He said he had not spoken to his mother on Wednesday and neither had Indian embassy officials spoken to him from Saudi Arabia.
