Curfew was imposed in Bandipore in north Kashmir [ Images ] on Friday owing to the tension following the killing of a youth in police firing. The indefinite curfew took effect from 4am, officials said in Srinagar [ Images ].
Police opened fire on Thursday when hundreds of people protesting the alleged beating of some civilians by the army at Kadura village tried to throng the stadium where Chief Minister Mufti Mohammed Sayeed [ Images ] was to hold a public meeting on Friday.
Seventeen-year-old Mushtaq Wani died in the firing and six people, including two police personnel, were injured in the incident. The chief minister later cancelled the meeting.
It firing triggered an angry reaction from the people who laid a siege around the local police station. The crowd lifted the siege only after the intervention of senior police officials.
The situation was now under control, officials said.
