Curfew was imposed in three police station areas in Indore on Monday as violence spread after two groups pelted stones at each other, prompting police to use force and teargas to disperse the mob.

Curfew was imposed to prevent incidents of stone-pelting in narrow lanes in Chhatripura, Pandrinath and Malharganj police station areas, Deputy Inspector General (Indore) Madhu Kumar Babu told PTI.

Police were deployed in strength across Indore and senior officials were patrolling the streets, he said.

Some people were injured in the violence and information about them was being collected, Babu said.

Tension gripped the areas after two groups pelted stones at each other in Bombay Bazaar on Monday morning, Superintendent of Police Anshuman Singh Yadav said.

Teargas shells were lobbed and mild force was used to disperse the crowd, he said adding, circumstances that led to violence were yet to be ascertained.
