In the first endeavour of its kind in the country, Uttar Pradesh Police have collaborated with Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, to study ways and means of improving the efficiency of the police force.

"We have a total of four pilot projects, involving a total cost of Rs 40 lakh, whereby problems plaguing the police force and their possible remedies would be studied jointly by our experts and members of IIT-Kanpur", said Additional Director General of Police, S K Rizvi.

He said the research projects, for which green signals have already been obtained from the state government as well as the Union Home Ministry, will be completed with the help of the computer, electronics, sociology and psychology departments of IIT Kanpur.

Of the four projects, one would focus on usage of advanced computerised communications system in police and another on digital crime-mapping to study the law and order situation in a particular area.

The remaining two projects would study the ways and means of motivating policemen to be receptive to innovations, Rizvi said.

Stressing the need for such researches, Rizvi said policing is not all about wielding the baton, as is the general perception, rather, it is a job requiring specific skills and exacting professional standards.
