Temperature dipped sharply in the national capital on Wednesday morning, as the cloud cover over the city cleared while fog continued to wreak havoc on air and rail traffic.

Barring Indian Airlines, no domestic flights could take off or land from the Indira Gandhi International Airport in the early hours of the day due to low visibility, airport sources said. Northern Railways continued to cancel a few services due to fog while several trains reaching here were running behind schedule.

After a warmer day on Tuesday, the temperature came down sharply on Wednesday with the minimum recording at six degrees celsius, one degree below normal, and maximum at 16.7 degrees, five notches below normal during this time of the season.

The minimum temperature recorded on Tuesday was 12.2 degrees celsius, five degrees above normal, because of the cloud cover over Delhi.

The Runway Visibility Range at the airport was low, hampering early morning operations, but it gradually improved as the sun came out and air operations resumed after 9.30 am, the sources said.

Indian Airlines operated as many as seven flights using the sophisticated CAT-III instrument landing system while no other carriers were able to operate till 08.45 am, the sources added.

The trains cancelled or rescheduled included Bhiwani-Farrukabad Kalindi Express, Ambala-Allahabad-Unchahar Express, Delhi-Sealdah Lal Quila Express and Toofan Express while Farakka Express between Malda and New Delhi, Saryu-Yamuna Express between Darbhanga and Delhi were running late, railway sources said.
