The Election Commission arrived in Gujarat on Sunday on a routine visit ahead of the state assembly elections scheduled to be held later this year, official sources said.

The commission, headed by Chief Election Commissioner V S Sampath, Election Commissioner H S Brahma, Deputy Election Commissioner Vinod Zutshi and other officials, arrived in Ahmedabad on Sunday evening, they said.

During their one-day visit beginning on Monday, the officials will meet representatives of principal state political parties.

According to state Chief Electoral Officer Anita Karwal, the panel will meet representatives of six political parties.

They will also meet officials, including district collectors, superintendents of police, besides Chief Secretary A K Joti and in-charge Director General of Police Chitranjan Singh.

The Election Commission will review the preparedness of the administration for conducting assembly polls, Karwal said, adding they will leave for Delhi on Monday evening.

According to sources, the Election Commission will also visit Himachal Pradesh before finalising the schedule for assembly polls in the two states.
