Saudi Arabia on Wednesday claimed that King Abdullah bin Abdul al-Aziz is trying to mediate between India and Pakistan to resolve their differences on various issues.

"King Abdullah has set in motion efforts to mediate between India and Pakistan. We hope that he will succeed in his efforts," Saudi Crown Prince Sultan, who is also the deputy prime minister, told Saudi journalists in remarks carried by state-run SPA news agency.

The agency quoted him as saying that Saudi Arabia was trying to reinforce security and stability in the Indian sub-continent by brokering peace between India and Pakistan. India has maintained it is against any third party mediation to resolve all differences, including on Jammu and Kashmir, with Pakistan.

The Saudi monarch had made a state visit to India in January and a few days later he travelled to Pakistan.
