An angry Prime Minister Narendra Modi has instructed his party leaders “not to address the nation” out of turn, adding that he would not make any “compromises” on the issue. Modi made the statement while addressing a meeting of all Bharatiya Janata Party law-makers in Parliament on Tuesday.
Modi’s reaction came on the back of Union Minister Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti using an expletive at a campaign rally in Delhi, thereby putting the BJP in an awkward situation.
The government faced severe heat in Parliament with members of the opposition demanding her firing and said that the PM should apologise too.
At a brief press conference, Jyoti said she had “already apologised for her remarks in Parliament and was not going to say anything else on the matter”.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Venkaiah Naidu, too, stood by his party MP, saying she had already expressed regret and apologised for the issue. "The matter ends there, there is a precedent in the House. This has become a habit of the Congress party, we are not here to accept their demands,” he said.
