Taxi and auto-rickshaw unions in New Delhi went on a one-day strike on Monday demanding a hike in tariff.

But the strike evoked no major response, with a split in the Federation of Transport Unions Congress.

The FTUC, which claimed support of most of the auto drivers, had called the strike. But some factions that were opposed to the strike broke away. The federation's president gave the strike call without consulting the other union leaders, they said.

There are about 15,000 taxis and 45,000 auto-rickshaws in the capital, out of which around 50,000 will remain off the road, those who called the strike said.

Meanwhile, 350 buses running on compressed natural gas will be made operational following the phasing out of the remaining 650 diesel buses on Sunday, Transport Minister Ajay Maken said.
