Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh has announced Rs 10 crore development package for the Sabarmati Ashram and conversion of the dandi yatra routeĀ into a heritage path.
The announcement was made on Wednesday at the concluding ceremony of the Congress' re-enactment of the historic Dandi march on the shores of the Arabian Sea.
Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, who was present on the occasion, received the flag from the Dandi marchers.
Men, women and children turned up in large numbers in Navsari district, where Mahatma Gandhi had pledged to fight the British government's decision to imposed salt tax 75 years ago.
All the places where the Mahatma and his followers had halted during the 26-day march would be converted into memorials, Dr Singh said.
"The government will also erect statues of all the 78 people who had walked along with Gandhiji in the march," he added.
The PM said the government would also set up a library of books on the Mahatma.
Sonia said that Gandhi's thoughts are as relevant now as it was during his time and added that no nation can progress unless it believes in Gandhian values.
Stating that politics should not degenerate into a means of achieving power, she said, 'instead it should be a means of service to the society and country'.
