Curfew continues in parts of Srinagar

Parts of Srinagar remained under curfew for the third consecutive day with authorities apprehending trouble after the congregational Friday prayers.

Normal life was affected in parts of Srinagar as the curfew continued in nine police station areas of the city following sectarian clashes.

Curfew is in force in Nowhatta, M R Gunj, Safakadal, Khanyar, Rainawari, Nigeen, Lal Bazaar, Zadibal and Parimpora police station areas.

The district magistrate Srinagar late Wednesday imposed curfew in the nine police station areas of the city after sectarian clashes broke out near Hawal area in the old city.

The situation remained largely peaceful yesterday after skirmishes between two communities in Zadibal area of the city on Wednesday, a police spokesman said.

Hawal, Gojwara and adjoining areas have become flash points for sectarian violence over the past couple of years during Muharram processions.

Kashmir University postponed all examinations scheduled to be held on Friday.

"All the Kashmir University examinations scheduled to be held on Friday, November 30, 2012 have been postponed. Fresh

dates will be notified separately," a university spokesman said on Thursday quoting an order issued by the Controller of Examinations.
