Six people were injured in a blast at the interstate bus terminus in Chandigarh on Thursday night, police said.

A senior police officer said the explosive was kept inside a pipe.

The blast occurred at around 2030 hrs in an empty waiting hall near the counter for Delhi-bound buses in Sector 17, Senior Superintendent of Police Gaurav Yadav said.

The entire area had been cordoned off, he said.

Eyewitnesses said they heard a deafening sound and before they could gather what had happened pieces of glass were strewn all over the place.

The blast created a big hole in a wall of the waiting room.

Ravinder Singh, whose shop is located a few metres away the blast site, said, "I saw some sparks and then yellow flame. After that, there was a deafening sound."

Sandeep, a conductor with the Haryana Roadways, said he was waiting for his Delhi-bound bus to start when the blast occurred.

"The loud bang left me almost deaf. There were pieces of glass and smoke all over the place."
