Bihar: Woman killed in stampede over free blankets

January 14, 2013 21:28 IST

A 65-year-old woman was killed and three others were injured in a stampede during a feast organised by ruling Janata Dal – United Member of Legislative Assembly Poonam Devi in Bihar's Khagaria district on Monday, said the police.

The legislator had hosted the feast at her home in Chukti village of the district.

Eyewitnesses said that a large number of people gate-crashed her house when blankets were being distributed among citizens by the MLA after the feast.

In the melee, the elderly woman and three others fell on the ground and people ran over them.

The cause of the stampede was being probed, Superintendent of Police Mithu Prasad said.

The deceased has been identified as Dani Devi of Sansarpur village, he said, adding that her body has been sent for post-mortem.
