Police informed that two ULFA militants came to Kailashpur High School while students were standing on the forecourt attending the morning prayer. The militants sent two of unsuspecting students for a teacher of the school, Rohini Gogoi (35).
As the teacher came out to meet his 'visitors,' the ULFA ultras waiting in the gate pumped bullets into his body from close range killing him on the spot. The incident evoked spontaneous reaction from students who were about to enter their classes after the morning prayer.
A large number of senior students gave the assailants a hot chase for about one kilometre before capturing one of them. The militant was lynched by the students along with villagers. The other
militant managed to flee.
The killed ULFA militant was identified as Budhen Dhadumia. A .56 bore pistol and 23 rounds of ammunition were recovered from him.
The killed teacher hails from Nagaon Tinali under Pengeri police station. He is survived by young wife and a five-year-old daugher.
A senior police official said that the incident was an reflection of people's pent up anger against the banned outfit which has been indulged in killing innocent civilians of late. More significant is that the incident has occurred in one of the known stronghold of the ULFA in Upper Assam.
A similar incident occurred in the state in the year 2004. On that occasion two brave heart school students from Chaygaon area in Kamrup district chased an armed ULFA militant who had just killed one of their teachers, for along distance before capturing him with help of villagers.
They were later conferred bravery award by the President of India in the year 2005.
