Assam: Ultras kill 11

At least 13 persons including seven Railway Protection Special Force personnel, two ULFA militants were killed in three separate incidents of violence in Assam on Friday.

Eleven persons including seven RPF men, one Northeast Frontier Railway official and three drivers were killed and three others were injured when Dimasa tribal militant ambushed an inspection team of the Railway at a place called Mandisha under Maibang police station of North Cachar Hill district in Assam.

The killed were identified as Nitish Kumar (Section Engineer of NRF), RPSF head constables: K P Singh and G Shankar; RPSF constables Malkit Singh, Shahid Ali, Manohar Prasad, B C Sharma, Karan Singh. Three others including two drivers and a contractor killed in the incident were Hriday Debnath, J J Ghose and Ram Das.

The injured Railway men were identified as Subodh Kumar (Section Engineer, NFR), S Rao and Swapan Chakraborty.

Police suspect it to be joint operation carried out by Black Widow militant group led by Joel Garlosa along with another Kuki tribal militant group. The incident occurred at around 9:30 am on Friday morning.

The militants attacked two vehicles of a four-car convoy carrying a NFR inspection team escorted by the RPF men to a construction site in the hill section under Lumding Division of the NFR.

The Railway Inspectors were going to visit a construction site. The NFR has undertaken a massive gauge conversion work at the Lumding-Silchar hill section, which is infested with tribal militants. The ultras decamped with weapons nd ammunition of the slain RPSF men after killing them. Two of the vehicles of the convoy were badly damaged in the attack.

Gun toting Dimasa militants belonging to the Black Widow group have cast a shadow over the NFR gauge conversion works by demanding hefty amount of money as extortions from contractots engaged in the Rs 1,500 crore railway project.

An ULFA militant identified as Debojit Konwar was killed in an encounter with a joint team of police and the Army at Borhat in Sivasagar duistrict on Friday morning following a fierce gun battle. Policve said the encounter between the ultras and the security personnel was going on till the time filing of this story. Police recovered some extortion notes from the killed militant.

Another unidentified ULFA militant was killed following an encounter with a joint team of police and the Army at Dhomdhoma in Nalbari disrict of Assam on Friday morning.
