The Journalists Forum Assam has appealed to the people of northeast India to celebrate Independence Day, defying the diktat of the militants.

As many as 12 militant groups in the northeast have called for boycott Independence Day celebrations, and a general strike from the Sunday midnight until 5 pm of August 15.

The forum of scribes in a statement argues that both I-Day and Republic Day are two auspicious occasions for every patriotic Indian to pay their respect to thousands of martyrs of India's Freedom Movement.

The forum has invited Guwahati based journalists, newspaper-television channel workers and nationalistic people to attend the National flag hoisting ceremony at Guwahati Press Club at 11 am on Monday.
