The Army on Monday rubbished allegations levelled by hardline Hurriyat Conference led by Syed Ali Shah Geelani that the force was trying to hush up the alleged rape of a woman by two men in uniform in south Kashmir last week.

Srinagar-based Defence spokesman Lt Col J S Brar in a statement issued on behalf of General Officer Commanding of Army's 15 Corps Lt Gen S A Hasnain rebutted the charges against the army levelled by the Hurriyat.

He also appealed to the people not to be misled by disinformation campaign against the force by people with "vested interests". "The Corps Commander (Lt Gen Hasnain) has requested the public not to be misled by those who are out to malign the Army because of the growing confidence of the public in them," he said.

The spokesman said the variations in the circumstances and the statements of the alleged victim's relatives are indicative that there is "much more than meets the eye" as far as the allegations against the Army are concerned.

He said the Hurriyat Conference led by Geelani had no idea about the strict procedures followed by the Army vis-a-vis the movement of its officers or soldiers.
