The Andhra Pradesh government on Wednesday turned down a demand from Opposition parties for instituting a judicial inquiry into the police firing incident at Gangavaram port on Monday, in which one person was killed.

The government also rejected a demand for stoppage of construction work on Gangavaram port till the rehabilitation package for affected persons is worked out.

However, Finance Minister K Rosaiah assured the leaders of various parties, who attended the all-party meeting, that the government would consider their other suggestions positively and take necessary action. He also reiterated that work on the port would not be stopped.

Rosaiah said that the government is going to consider the suggestion for locating the fishing jetty for displaced fishermen at Nallamarammapadalu village near Gangavaram instead of Yarada, which was far-away.

He also said that a judicial inquiry would not be acceptable as the chief minister has already announced an inquiry by a senior administration official.

Home Minister K Jana Reddy said that the details of the cases were yet to be obtained. He would hold a high-level meeting to review the cases and take a decision on withdrawing them, as demanded by the opposition parties.
