Top Students Islamic Movement of India leader Safdar Nagori and four of his associates were on Tuesday sent to 14-day police custody in a case relating to the July 26 serial blasts in Ahmedabad after the prosecution told a court that their remand was needed to gather more information about the terror attack that killed 55 persons.

Nagori, Abdul Sibley, Hafeez Hussain, Kamruddin Nagori and Amil Pervez were produced before Metropolitan Magistrate G M Patel who sent them to police custody till September 23.

The SIMI members, arrested from Indore in March 2008, were brought to Ahmedabad by Gujarat police from Madhya Pradesh last month for interrogation in connection with the serial bomb blasts.

All the five were previously booked in a blast case registered with the Shahibaug police station and had completed 14 days in police remand after which they were sent to judicial custody on Monday.

The police on Tuesday sought their 14-day remand in the blasts case registered in Maninagar, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi's assembly constituency.

Police have registered 18 cases relating to the explosions, responsibility for which was claimed by the Indian Mujahideen, which Gujarat police say is a SIMI offshoot.

Arguing for their custody, Special Public Prosecutor J M Panchal said investigation has revealed Nagori and his accomplices were associated with terrorist outfits whose names cannot be disclosed at this stage.
