Vote! A pat for the BJP's Parliament blockage, or a kick?

Last updated on: August 28, 2012 21:53 IST
The Bharatiya Janata Party's aggression over the CAG report on the government's coal blocks allocation policy, which caused a loss of Rs 1.85 lakh crore to the exchequer, has resulted in the monsoon session of Parliament being virtually washed out.

Forget the passage of any bill, even the prime minister's statement on the controversy could not be delivered without protests and adjournments.

The BJP believes its tactic of stalling Parliament is right, as the impugned policy was taken when the coal portfolio was held by the prime minister, and he should resign owning moral responsibility for the same.

The UPA, notably the Congress, offers that while it is willing to debate the issue in Parliament, the BJP is playing politics over the issue. On Tueday Sonia Gandhi took the battle a notch higher by saying 'blackmail was the BJP's bread and butter'.

But what do you think? Is the BJP right in stalling Parliament thus, leading to virtually no business being transacted, or should they roll back their tactic and abide by parliamentary norms and submit to a debate in the House?
