Major fire at Amla Air Force depot

July 10, 2004 15:34 IST

An accidental blast triggered off a major fire at the Amla Air Force depot, about 30 km from Betul in Madhya Pradesh, early Saturday morning, an IAF spokesman said.

The blast took place in one of the ammunition sheds at the depot, the spokesman said. He said the fire has been since brought under control.

He said a court of inquiry has been instituted to ascertain the cause of the fire and the extent of damage.

Though the depot is located near a civilian residential area, the spokesman said there had been no reports of any casualties.

District Collector Sudha Choudhary said  that the fire started early Saturday morning in a section of the depot used for
storing explosives.

Two Air Force employees -- Janak and Rajaram -- were injured while clearing debris after the fire was put off.
